CASSETTE LAMP

This simple looking design is the product of many years of development.

For each lamp 32 cassettes are sanded down on the edges to offer a clean connection. The shade is then built up by stitching each cassette to the next with individual ribbons of audio tape, utilising the ribbon and cellotape skills honed as a youth of the 80’s. Earlier models relied only on the ribbon to hold the cassettes together, and while I prefer this process in principle I now also add a dab of glue to each cassette so that the whole shade becomes a solid form – keeping it protected from curious hands and making sure it will stand the test of time.

A simple plywood base finished in oil holds the shade in place. The shade can be lifted off and turned around to show off your favourite tapes from every angle.

While I continue to make prefabricated versions of this lamp for my shop, I find the most successful lamps result from clients sending me their own collections of old cassettes to be tuned into a lamp of their own (The first lamp in the images below was created like this, and has a very personal feel with classic tapes and home recorded mix-tapes giving a uniquely colourful outcome)

This is a standard 32 tape lamp, but if you have a larger collection then the possibilities are endless.
