Harry Harris

This bespoke kitchen cabinet is built around the set of IKEA ringhult kitchen doors requested by the client.

My challenge was to design a solid timber frame to fit the space exactly, utilising the dimensions dictated by the available door sizes, to deliver a modern looking and functional kitchen unit. The client also requested a lift up bench seat for extra storage.

I love designing to a set of limitations and parameters, so this design was arrived at pretty quickly. After a few rounds of tweeking with the client to get the exact balance of shelving space correct and to discuss their need for adjustable shelving in some of the cupboards, we were ready to get building.

(The design model is included at the bottom of the post to show how I go about representing my designs to clients.)

The frame is solid redwood throughout, stained to a deep walnut colour to match the rest of the kitchen space. It fitted into the wall space perfectly with barely a couple of millimeters to spare. It was pre-fabricated in 4 pieces to make it easier to move and fit through the rear door to the kitchen.

The doors and drawers are all on soft close-push to open latches (ikea’s own brand) which work great and give a clean look to the unit as no handles are required.
